In 2025, Bitcoin was declared “dead” more often than in the whole 2024

In 2025, Bitcoin (BTC) reached a new all-time high, but it failed to convince its detractors and skeptics to disappear. Consequently, the number of declarations regarding Bitcoin’s «demise» has increased.
In the first six months of 2025 alone, there were 11 obituaries mentioning Bitcoin. Comparatively, in the entirety of 2024, there had been only 10 such statements, based on data from Bitcoin Obituaries as of May 14th.
As per statistics, Bitcoin has been declared «dead» in almost every market cycle. Pessimism about its viability peaked in 2017, when the price of BTC nearly reached $20,000 — at that time, 93 obituaries were published. This accounts for 21.6% of all publications about Bitcoin’s death. In stark contrast, in 2010, when few people had heard about Bitcoin, only one obituary was published.
Altogether, since its inception, Bitcoin has been pronounced dead 430 times.
The most widely read obituaries of 2025 surfaced when Bitcoin hit $104.735 on January 30th. Nobel laureate Eugene Fama asserted that cryptocurrencies lack a stable value and predicted Bitcoin’s downfall based on this fact.
A few days earlier, on January 26th, long-standing BTC critic Peter Schiff dismissed Bitcoin’s proof-of-work algorithm as lacking genuine support.
On February 28th, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko declared that Bitcoin «has no value» due to environmental concerns. Coming from the head of this particular project, this sounds ironic.
When Bitcoin was trading at $83,843 on April 4th, Canadian billionaire Frank Giustra declared that the tale of «digital gold» was fading. By the way, on April 10th, with Bitcoin hovering at $80.714, Schiff predicted a financial crisis in 2025 that would «kill» the cryptocurrency.
To date, Schiff is the most vocal critic of Bitcoin, having made 18 statements about its demise. Warren Buffett, founder of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKb), is in second place, followed by economist Steve Hanke.
